For the past three years, my little family has decamped from busy, noisy Brooklyn to the deep green exhale of Connecticut, for two magical weeks. We’re lucky to be friends with another family, the Zwicksons, who live here but spend their summer abroad. Their house is light-filled, kid-friendly, and to this city-dweller, feels like the size of a planet. My wife and I have to *text each other* if she’s working in the attic.
We take the baby to the nearby beach to paddle in the shallows, poking at shells and seaweed. She loves being in the water, tipping backward so we can float her while she giggles, splashing the water with her fat little hand. She has about twenty words now, among them, Beach.
